A controversial crematorium development forced through by the Government will be up and running within two years.

As revealed yesterday Sajid Javid MP, the Secretary of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government, has ruled in favour of a scheme at Broad Lane, Essington, after it was originally refused by South Staffordshire Council.

In reaction, applicants Westerleigh Group confirmed that development would begin soon.

Managing Director Richard Evans said: "It has taken a very long time to get to the point where we can provide this essential service to bereaved people locally.
"We are planning to start construction next year and we expect the new facility to be fully operational in 2019.
"The new facility will serve people who do not want to go as far as Bushbury or Streetly, where there are often long waiting times for funeral slots.
"It will feel very different to neighbouring crematoria, providing peace and seclusion in a natural, countryside setting where families can have a dignified, personal service."
