West Lancashire Crematorium presents donation to Southport Lifeboats

West Lancashire Cemetery and Crematorium made a £3,000 donation to the local Southport Lifeboats in aid of the essential lifesaving work they provide.

Southport Lifeboats are run by the Southport Offshore Rescue Trust, they provide rescue services around the Sefton coastline and rely entirely on donations and fundraising.

Their crew of dedicated volunteers has helped in the safe return of hundreds of people with 10 of the crew members having received the Queen’s Commendation medals.

The money was raised from West Lancashire Crematorium’s metal recycling scheme.

With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled and any money raised is used to support charities and other worthy causes in the communities surrounding every crematorium and cemetery which are part of Westerleigh Group.

West Lancashire Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest owner and operator of crematoria and cemeteries, with 36 sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide pleasant, peaceful places for people to visit and reflect. 

Laura Linnane, Site Manager at West Lancashire Crematorium said: “We wanted to donate to the lifeboats as they are purely volunteers and provide an incredible service, helping to rescue over 400 casualties both human and animal, since they were formed.

“Our donation will enable them to purchase such things as lifesaving equipment and go towards the new lifeboat station which became operational on New Year’s Day.

“We were delighted to be able to attend and were shown around by Paul and Tony from the Lifeboat Station, seeing the work they do and the equipment they need really shows where the donation is going.”

The staff at West Lancashire Crematorium intend to support the Southport Lifeboats annually.

Tony D’Arcy-Masters, Southport Lifeboats Treasurer, said: “We were really happy that we were able to show both Laura and Gary around our new Lifeboat Station recently.

“I hope they were able to see that all the money donated to our organisations goes directly into the service to fund new equipment and premises such as the new inshore lifeboat.”
