Cromer Crematorium earns outstanding inspection report

Cromer Crematorium has been praised by an industry inspector for delivering an “excellent level of service provision.”

Dave Clay, an inspector for the Federation of Burial & Cremation Authorities (FBCA), concluded that he “did not feel it necessary to make any recommendations” following his visit to the site in December.

The Federation is the UK’s principal representative of burial and cremation authorities, providing a range of services to support its members care for more than 400,000 funerals every year.

The FBCA’s Cremation Compliance Scheme involves scrutinising six separate key areas of service delivery, through discussion and viewing of more than 80 points of interest, and Mr Clay scored the crematorium 100% in five of those six key areas.

Cromer Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, one of the UK’s largest independent owners and operators of crematoria and cemeteries, with 42 sites in England, Scotland and Wales, and which is trusted by more families than any other provider to deliver funerals for their loved ones.

All Westerleigh's locations are set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide peaceful places for people to visit and reflect, while benefitting from exceptional care and support from its teams.

Cromer Crematorium Manager Mark Carpenter said: “I’m very proud that we have earned top marks in five of the six key areas of service, and an overall inspection score of 98.5%.

“As part of Westerleigh Group, we are committed to ensuring everything we do is done with exceptional levels of care and support, and earning such a positive report from the FBCA inspector shows that we doing that.

“I must pay tribute to my team here at Cromer; an inspection report like this is a reflection of the professionalism, dedication and commitment shown every single day by the team.

“Membership of the FBCA is entirely voluntary and not all cremation operators choose to join.

“However, we take great pride in the consistently high standards we uphold across every aspect of our work and we welcome the opportunity for our facilities and practices to be independently assessed by industry experts.”

Mr Clay found the crematorium “…to be operating in accordance with the three key areas of compliance: 1. The Cremation Regulations 2009, relating to statutory documentation; 2. The Defra Process Guidance notes 5/12, relating to cremation; and 3. The Code of Cremation Practice, relating to all aspects of the service.”
