Site Manager

West Suffolk Crematorium (Bury St Edmunds)

Salary: Competitive

Full time - 40 Hours per week

Westerleigh Group is the leading developer and operator of crematoria and cemeteries in the UK caring for over 40,000 funerals a year and we have a unique and interesting opportunity at one of our facilities.

We have proven expertise and have established a reputation for creating beautifully landscaped, high quality and peaceful facilities with service to the bereaved at their heart.

Working together as one team, we deliver the highest possible standards of care whilst always putting the safety of our employees and customers first. Our proven expertise and years of experience have established our strong reputation in this highly specialized field. When you join them as Site Manager, it’s an opportunity to be a part of something truly meaningful and significant.

The challenge

The team here in beautiful Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk is well established, with over 30 years’ history, and it shows in every detail of the perfectly-kept grounds. But, though it has worked well so far, we need to make sure that we move with the times so that we can continue to succeed at what we do.

This is your chance to remodel a team who will help you implement a more modern, commercially focussed vision of the unique service we provide. You’ll lead day-to-day operations and drive the commercial side of the business, even becoming a personal licensee of our hospitality function. Confidently – and with the air of respect that’s typical of our environment – you’ll build relationships with funeral directors and the local community, including care homes, hospices and hospital teams. Not to mention managing significant compliance duties, from environmental health paperwork to Health & Safety.

Leadership by example is the way forward here. Showing how things are done by rolling up your sleeves and getting involved with everything from buildings to grounds maintenance and taking a front seat in driving the profitability of our hospitality. By working across all functions, you’ll redefine the culture here, bringing the team together, and showing them how to achieve the excellence in service that really makes a difference for our service users.

The person

Although there’s a chance you’ve managed crematoria in the past, you may well also – and are more likely to – come from a different kind of managerial background. What truly matters here is not the industry so much as the skills your managerial career has helped you to develop. Namely, compassion, the ability to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life and, crucially, the tenacity and vision it takes to bring big changes.

We’re looking for someone who can bring their authority to an already-established team and set new standards and expectations. You’ll earn their respect because you’re interested in what they do, and you listen to their concerns. And that’s how you’ll strengthen our team. Because you understand that the empathy you put into building meaningful team relationships is the key to making our care of service extra special.

Day-to-day, you’ll need to be IT literate in basics like email, Microsoft Office and Excel, so that you can deal with the administrative side of the role effectively. And, ideally, you’ll also have a full driving licence so that you can get out into the community and support other sites. You should also be willing to learn how to conduct cremations.

If this sounds like you, this is an opportunity to really make your mark within a growing business with a strong focus on developing its people and ensuring they have all the support they need to progress and achieve their full potential.
