Salary: £29,000 - £32,000 + Bonus + Benefits

Usually 8.30am – 5pm Monday – Friday. 40 Hours per week

We have a vacancy for an Assistant Manager to join our busy team based at our beautiful New Southgate Cemetery and Crematorium (North London).

We are the largest independent operator of crematoria in the UK, employing more than 400 empathetic and dedicated individuals and we are growing.

The role

As an Assistant Manager you’ll be supporting the Site Manager and will play a major role in the hands-on day to day operation of the site. You will lead and develop the site team and work with the Site Manager to create a culture that reflects our values, creating a culture and environment focused on standards and putting families first. 

There is a team of 10 staff and this is one of our biggest and most complex sites with buildings dating back to the Victorian era, over 200,000 burial plots and a busy crematorium. The site will also be undertaking a huge renovation this year so there will be lots to get involved in.

No 2 days will be the same as each family and service are uniquely personal. You will be involved in a variety of tasks each day including:

  • Support the Site Manager in the commercial performance of the site (sales, cost control and profit in particular)
  • Optimise the efficient use of site resources including staff, facilities and ensue they are fit for purpose and we are service ready at all times.
  • To work, reflecting our values, to create an excellent working environment for your team, allowing them to provide the best service they can.
  • To ensure adherence to the “Code of Practice” as laid down by The Federation of British Cremation Authorities.
  • To develop and manage your team effectively under the guidance of the Site Manager and carry out regular 121’s with the team.
  • Ensure all plant and equipment maintained to a high standard and in line with company policy.
  • Ensure the highest standards of health and safety and ensure compliance with Westerleigh Group H&S policy and manage the site team to put safety first at all times.
  • Ensuring day-to-day operations run as smoothly as possible, and follow complaints procedure and escalate when needed in accordance with Westerleigh Group Complaints policy..
  • Gain a thorough understanding of cremation services and Epitaph to co-ordinate the arrangements for a funeral between the family, funeral directors, the clergy and ourselves.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the memorial range in order to provide effective advice to families.

Supporting the team with their duties when required:

  • Chapel – Welcoming the families and Funeral Directors attending and ensuring things run smoothly.
  • Cremation – You will be fully trained and work towards an accredited FBCA qualification. Involved in the end to end cremation process and ashes management. You will need to be able bodied as there will be manual handling involved in this process.
  • Ad hoc work – for example a Christmas service or making sure the site is tidy and presentable.

This role requires flexibility and pulling together as one team to support each other and provide the exceptional care and service that we are known for.

About you

You’re an up and coming leader, the type of person who will turn their hand to anything and loves to learn new things. Someone flexible, who likes to take the initiative. You might not know everything there is to know about how a funeral service runs – but fast-forward a bit and you’ll be a model of best practice in both

  • We are looking for someone with some previous Team Leader / Management experience who is up for a challenge. This site is on a change journey so there is lots of opportunity for you to make your mark and be involved on the road to success.
  • Comfortable to work with financials and commercial acumen.
  • A real team player with natural compassion and the desire to make a difference every day.
  • Organised with excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator able to speak to people in a caring and understanding manner.
  • Good IT skills and comfortable with Word / Excel and emails.
