Crematorium trio's marathon fund-raising effort

A trio from Herne Bay Crematorium are preparing for a marathon fund-raising effort next month to raise funds for Cruse Bereavement Support.

Crematorium Manager Damien Corlett-Oates and Crematorium Assistants Marie Hamilton and Chris Rootsey are taking part in the TCS London Marathon MyWay event on Sunday 27 April – the same day as the London Marathon itself.

But instead of pounding the streets of the capital, the crematorium’s intrepid trio will be trekking 26.2 miles from Pegwell Bay to Herne Bay.

London Marathon MyWay enables people to complete the same distance as the main event itself, on the same day, but in their own way, whether that means powering over hills or ambling along country lanes.

Herne Bay Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, one of the UK’s largest independent owners and operators of crematoria and cemeteries, with 41 sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

Damien said: “Cruse Bereavement Support is a charity we have a very good relationship with and have supported them in the past already.

“Their local representative who we know very well asked us if we would consider taking part in this event on their behalf, and how could we refuse?

“Cruse is the UK’s leading bereavement charity, providing valuable support to people during one of the most painful times in life.

“Its vision is to help create a world where everyone grieving is supported, respected and understood, which certainly resonates with the work we do at Herne Bay Crematorium in caring for the bereaved.

“It will be an honour for us to wear the Cruse colours on London Marathon day.”

Damien and his colleagues hope to raise £500 through this event, but he said they are planning to do some further fundraising for the charity throughout the year.
