New crematorium opens in the West Midlands

by Crematorium Editor Westerleigh News

A new environmentally friendly crematorium offering families state-of-the-art facilities set in beautiful, secluded, and tranquil grounds has opened its doors to serve the communities of South Birmingham, Bromsgrove, Redditch, and other parts of north Worcestershire.

Waseley Hills Crematorium has been developed by Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner and operator of crematoria and cemeteries.

The Group’s portfolio now includes 36 sites across England, Scotland and Wales, all set within beautifully-landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide pleasant, peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

Whilst conveniently located just on the edge of Birmingham and close to Bromsgrove and Redditch,  the new crematorium is located at the foot of the adjoining Waseley Hills Country Park, and enjoying views of the surrounding rolling hills, hedgerows, pastures, and pockets of woodland, providing a picturesque, peaceful, and special setting for services.

The purpose-built contemporary chapel was designed to connect with and nestle within this landscape with a curving form, vertical timber clad elevations, a distinctive living green wildflower roof and natural materials carried through internally, providing a beautiful, calm, and intimate ceremony space.

The bespoke design of the covered porte corchère creates a sense of arrival and welcome and the covered floral tribute area, allows families and friends the opportunity to gather in peaceful tranquillity after a service.

There is parking for 120 cars, with overflow areas available if required, and the contemporary chapel can seat 105 guests, with significant additional standing room. State-of-the-art media facilities  include an extensive music library, live webcasts, two tribute screens within the chapel and speakers outside to enable larger congregations to participate in the service.

Unlike many local crematoria, standard service times are offered at one hourly intervals, ensuring families have privacy, tranquillity and are not rushed.

The site incorporates many environmental features as well as protecting and creating new wildlife habitats and retaining trees and enhancing native planting of new trees and shrubs.  Environmental  credentials include the very latest advanced filtration and abatement technologies and other features to minimise emissions including  being one of only a small number of facilities in the UK to have NOx abatement.

The Westerleigh Group is also signed up to the FCBA Environmental Policy, a commitment to continually review and improve our activities, products and service in relation to the environment.

Site manager Joy Edgington said: “My team and I are looking forward to providing vital support to the community so that our very uniquely-designed facility will soon become the crematorium of choice for families near and further afield.

“The crematorium is now open, and anyone is welcome to come and visit us.”

Westerleigh Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Debbie Smith said: “We are very proud to have created this beautiful and environmentally friendly crematorium.

“It’s been a privilege to be able to oversee the opening of this state-of-the-art facility so early on in my role as the CEO of Westerleigh Group.

“I am confident that Waseley Hills Crematorium will be a huge asset to the communities of South Birmingham, Bromsgrove, Redditch and other parts of  Worcestershire, extending our exceptional care and support to the bereaved families in this area.”
