North Wiltshire Crematorium has taken steps to support a local walking rugby club by sponsoring its shirts in time for the new season.

The Chippenham Codgers will be striding onto the pitch with the words ‘North Wiltshire Crematorium’ emblazoned across their latest kit as part of the sponsorship deal.

North Wiltshire Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner and operator of crematoria and cemeteries, with 37 sites in England, Scotland and Wales, all set within beautifully-landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide pleasant, peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

The Codgers Walking Rugby Team was set up by Chippenham Rugby Club just over a year ago and is aimed particularly at the over-50s.

Walking rugby is a slower, less physical, non-contact, version of the sport which is particularly suited to retired men and women, those recovering from injury or illness, and those who simply wish to stay fit and active.

The aim is participate, compete and have fun. Sporting enthusiasts can enjoy the pace and competitiveness while the match officials maintain fairness and inclusivity for all players.

North Wiltshire Crematorium is funding the sponsorship through its metal recycling scheme.

With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled and any money raised is used to support charities and other worthy causes in the communities surrounding every crematorium and cemetery which are part of Westerleigh Group.

Katie Capel, site manager at North Wiltshire Crematorium, said: “Like all Westerleigh Group’s crematoria, we are passionate about being a good neighbour and having a positive presence in our local communities.

“The walking rugby club provides a lot of enjoyment for local people and makes a positive difference to both their physical and mental wellbeing, and we are proud to be able to support the Chippenham Codgers.

“We look forward to the start of the new season and following the achievements of the rugby team. We wish all the players lots of energy and enjoyment from playing and, every success during their forthcoming fixtures.”

Matthew Stephen, Chippenham RFC Communications Manager, said: “Chippenham Codgers Walking Rugby really appreciate the valued support from North Wiltshire Crematorium and the brilliant team at Westerleigh.

“As a community-based club with over 1,000 members, we rely upon local sponsors to support the sporting activities we provide.

“Walking rugby was introduced at Chippenham RFC to allow continued involvement in the great game of rugby while also offering a physical and social element to our members.

“Rugby is a game that has many formats for all age groups and genders, and it’s fantastic that we can offer walking rugby to the over 50s, thanks to the great support from North Wiltshire Crematorium.”
